5 walking holidays for all abilities

While a leisurely beach holiday is great, sometimes you can find yourself looking for something a little more energetic. Walking holidays are becoming an increasingly popular getaway for those keen to try something a little bit different on their annual vacation, as well as those who want to improve their level of fitness and avoid the usual holiday blowout.

Spending time exploring the world can be extraordinarily rewarding, especially if you're with family or loved ones and are prepared to take your time and enjoy yourself. With this in mind, we've put together our top five walking holidays, for all abilities; from casual stroller to dedicated trekker, there's something for everyone. So strap on your boots and enjoy your perfect hiking holiday.

1) For beginners or groups of mixed ability, the Lake District offers plenty of options. Start off on the smaller lakes and fells at the beginning of the break, building up to slightly more tricky walks as your confidence grows. Cumbria is a famously welcoming spot, so get ready to make plenty of new friends and make sure to try one or two of the small country pubs dotted around the place, as foodies (and those who like a beer or two) will not be disappointed.

2) For seasoned walkers, a break that presents extra challenges is always welcome. A trekking holiday is the perfect way to get your wilderness fix, as well as test your survival skills and improve fitness levels. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, is certainly a challenge, but one that is more than worth it. Notoriously tricky, this once-in-a-lifetime trek offers stunning views and is extremely rewarding, but should only be attempted by the most dedicated.

3) If you're on the lookout for amazing views and the chance to get back to nature, Sweden can't be beaten for dramatic landscapes across the whole country. Experienced walkers should head to the Jämtland Mountains for a self-lead holiday (accommodation blocks throughout the mountains offer a place to rest your head, but the ultimate route is up to you). For something a little gentler, Roslagsleden is slightly more urban, with plenty of towns and villages to explore while you're there.

4) Holidays are about indulgence, and if you're unwilling to miss out on some fabulous cuisine while you're away why not try a food and wine tour? Vineyard tours in countries such as Spain and France are the perfect way to let go of the diet for a week or so, as well as learning more about the country you're in. Even better, all that walking will mean you can fully indulge without any nagging diet guilt during your time away.

5) Animal lovers will be keen to get back to nature during their walking break, as well as see some of their favourite creatures in their natural environment. A safari tour is a great way of seeing some of our planet's most exotic animals, as well as experiencing the African savannah in all its glory. There are plenty of options available, but for a wide range of animals Zambia is one of the best: the 'Big Five' are all in attendance, as well as huge numbers of exotic birds and reptiles.

Wherever you're headed this summer, activity holidays are a great way of getting out and seeing the world at your own pace so no more package resorts or pre-determined bus tours for you!

It's important to remember, however, that the usual safety measures still apply, even when you're on holiday. Invest in the right kit, choose sensible footwear, and make sure you have a map and small survival kit at all times in case of emergency and you'll be able to concentrate on enjoying your trip.

A walking holiday can be slightly more risky than the average beachside break, but it can also be infinitely more rewarding, so grab your map and snacks and enjoy.
